
Part IV — What the Mill Remains
The Briscoe Grain Elevator rose against the moonscape like a concrete ribcage. Maren parked a quarter mile out and walked. No headlights. No flashlight until she was inside the perimeter fence.
The main structure was what everybody expected. Rusted conveyor housings. An office with shattered windows and tumbleweeds. The ghosts here were ordinary ones. Farmers who had worked too hard. A county that had moved on.
She found the elevator shaft and descended with her flashlight and a pry bar. The door at the bottom had already been opened. Recent. The lock was cut clean.
The tunnel extended fifty feet to a steel door with no handle. And next to the door, a small panel. Glass. Tinted. Dark until she held her flashlight against it. Then it lit up. Green characters on black.
WELCOME BACK.
"I haven't been here before," she said.
The door opened. Not sliding or swinging. Iris. Like a camera aperture, the steel segments folding into themselves with a whisper of precision that 1987 could not have produced.
Beyond the door, the basement opened up into something that was not a basement.
The ceiling was smooth composite. The walls were lined with conduit and cabling that ran in geometries too purposeful to be industrial. The floor was clean. Climate controlled. The air had the recycled taste of a sealed environment on life support.
Equipment lined the walls. Panels. Consoles. Screens dark but warm to the touch — idling. Waiting. The design language was clean and anthropometric. Built for human hands. Human posture. Human sight lines.
It was not military installation architecture. It was not industrial. It was domestic.
Someone had built a home down here.
She found the first sign of habitation in the third room. A kitchen. Stainless steel. Induction cooktop. Cabinets that contained canning jars. Home-canned tomatoes. Green beans. A home-canned kitchen in a secret basement beneath a condemned grain elevator in Reno County, Kansas.
She kept moving. A bathroom with running water. A sleeping area with a twin bed made tight. Bookshelves. Actual physical books. She ran her fingers along the spines. Physics texts. Agricultural journals. A collection of Edna Ferber novels. A Bible with a cracked leather cover.
On the desk in the study, she found a photograph.
Black and white. A woman in 1940s clothing standing in front of a water tower. Behind it, the Briscoe Grain Elevator, new. The woman was smiling. Written on the white border: E. Briscoe — Harlow — 1942.
Maren knew that name. Everybody in Harlow knew that name. Eleanora Briscoe. The woman who had owned the mill before the county condemned it. The woman who had died in 1969 and left no heirs.
Eleanora Briscoe, who had lived in this town for eighty-seven years and never once, in any record Maren had found, built anything beneath her mill.
She heard a sound behind her. A door opening. The iris door in the hallway folding closed.
Someone else was down here.
